Yusuf Nsibambi Optimistic of Winning Deputy Speakership Race
Despite the fact that he is coming from an opposition party (Forum for Democratic Party), Mawokota South elected Member of Parliament, Hon. Yusuf Nsibambi is optimistic that with landslide, he will win the Deputy Speaker of the 11th parliament position.
So far eight Members of Parliament have publicly came out to show their interest in the deputy speaker post following the announcement made by the current deputy, Hon. Jacob Oulanyah that he is going to contest against his fellow Party member, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga on the Speakersgip post come may this year.
This is the first time one of the founders of Forum for Democratic Change, Yusuf Nsibambi is entering the gates of Parliament as a honorable Member of the August House.
In an exclusive interview with this website at his office in Kampala, Nsibambi revealed that he is to get enough support that will help him take the deputy speaker post despite the fact the he is contesting against members who have been in Parliament for over five years.
“We have like 98 independents, a number of MPs from opposition, and many from NRM are new in this parliament, don’t expect them to again support an NRM member and yet their own on top (Speakership position) are fighting.” Nsibambi said.
Though ots his first time in Parliament, Nsibambi 55, is saying that he is not a political novice in Uganda.
“Have been a political activist for many years, I have been a lawyer to many who have been facing injustices and on many occasions have been doing this for free, on record I have more than 47 cases I got involved.” Nsibambi explaining.
“As I said before, I have been a law and governance lecturer at Makerere for over 20 years, I was a deputy president of FDC in Central in Dr. Kizza Besigye’s reign, have been the chairman of FDC electoral commission until last year I resigned, so someone saying that am a political novice will be totally lying.” He added.
The Mawokota South MP, said that he is bring an independent and modulate stand in parliament that has been not in existence before and it’s one of the reasons as to why he come out to contest as he explains.
“What pushed me to contest on this post is to come with the independent and modulate stand in Parliament. You all saw it when Hon. Kyagulanyi endorsed me, Dp did not bring a candidate against me, FDC allowed me go unopposed, this shows that I have that unique element the parliament need at deputy speaker level. Now we have 98 independent MPs, who will stand with them, who will bring them together.
Nsibambi is currently contesting against, Bukedea District Woman MP, Anita Among 48 and a member of committee on Finance, planning and economic development, Jacob Oboth-Oboth 50, MP of newly created West Budama Central but has been in Parliament since 2011.
Minister for planning and MP Ndorwa West MP Kabale District since 2006, David Bahati 48 is also in the race, MP Kampala Central, Muhammad Nsereko, Thomas Tayebwa 41, MP Ruhinda North, Robina Rwakoojo, Gomba West MP are also in the race. Theodore Ssekikubo from Lwemiyaga and Shartis Musherure Kuteesa of Mawogola North are also in the same race.
