The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) asked universities and other higher institutions of learning not to reopen for non finalists until after at least three months, this website learnt.
According to the letter from NCHE dated 27th January 2021, this website had a sight on, advised all vice chancellors and principals of Higher Education Institutions not to reopen for non finalists until the government shall get the lasting solution for the COVID-19 pandemic that forced the closure of schools last year.
In the same letter signed by the NCHE Executive Director, Professor Mary Okwakol PhD asked the institutions to continue with the online studying at least for three months despite the fact that the availability of internet in Uganda is minimal.
“The National Council for Higher Education is in receipt of a communication from the first lady and minister of Education and Sports (Janet Kataha Museveni) informing us that based on the advice from the presidential scientific Advisory committee, the president has guided that all higher Education institutions should continue studying online using the ODel System for at least another three months.” The letter reads in part.
Professor, Mary Okwakol in the same letter advised all the institutions that don’t have that system to acquire it until the government will get the lasting solution.
Currently it’s only the candidate classes and finalists that are allowed to physically continue with their studies.
First Lady is expected tomorrow, Thursday 28, January 2021 to give her communication to the public about the reopening of secondary and primary schools for continuing students classes.
Uganda closed down it’s education institutions on 18th March 2020 in pursuit of preventing to spread of Corona virus.
