Pepsi UFL: Ggaba Boys ‘Sink in Own Lake’, SLAU Refuses to ‘Eat Fish Bones ‘
Heading to the first quarter final of the 10th edition of the Pepsi University Football League, Kampala University, the Ggaba boys had all hopes and confidence to take the first leg advantage.
However, the results from Thursday’s end to end encounter, at Kibuli Demonstration School Playground came the other way round, the Ggaba boys lost the first leg 1-0 to 2019 finalists, St Lawrence University, thanks to Fahad Aniku late strike.
On his debut in the University League, Fahad Aniku collected the whole three points for SLAU with his tap in strike that came three minutes to final whistle.
A free kick came from the left flank, blocked by Kampala University’s defender but the ball landed close to Aniku’s well positioned left foot that hit the back of the net and set the visitors into surprise celebrations.
An encounter played at Kibuli on Thursday was indeed a game of two halves regards dominance from both sides.
Hosts, the two time champions, saw the ball for the largest part of the first half but could not find a way through hence a goalless draw at the interval.
SLAU had an improved start to the second half and dominated proceedings throughout and managed a goal towards the end of the game, and indeed they were a bully in the middle of the field.
Davis Nnono’s charges will build on their slim win picked away from home when they host the second leg in two weeks at Crown City Campus, Kavule, though in his words, said that its not yet over despite the first leg 1-0 advantage.
“It was a fair game, they matched us technically but tactically we were better than them [KU] that’s why we won the day, however, it’s still a huge hill to climb but we got a good foundation to build on.” Says Nono in the post match interview.
Ojok Simon, Kampala University’s assistant tactician who stood in for absence Vincent Tumusiime Titi, revealed that they did their best only that the luck wasn’t on their side and the only error they did in back costed them.
“I can’t blame my players, the worked on their best but the error my defense made, it’s only one that costed us and maybe my forwards never created enough spaces upfront but I believe in the second leg we are going to rectify as coaching staff but again it’s not yet over. “
Action in the first leg of the quarterfinals will resume next week on Tuesday, September 20th, 2022 when Bugema University hosts Uganda Martyrs University.
