President Museveni Commends Uganda Tourism Association as Industry Leaders Celebrate Excellence at 2026 Tourism Banquet
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has applauded the Uganda Tourism Association (UTA) for bringing together players in the country’s tourism industry, describing the association as a key force behind the continued growth and coordination of Uganda’s private tourism sector.
The President’s remarks were delivered by the guest of honour, Ms Diana Museveni Kyaremera, during the 2026 Uganda Tourism Association Annual Tourism Banquet held at Sheraton Kampala Hotel on Thursday 16th, July 2026. The colourful event attracted hundreds of stakeholders from Uganda’s tourism fraternity, including government officials, diplomats, conservation agencies, hotel owners, tour operators, investors, development partners and representatives of various tourism associations.
In his message, President Museveni praised UTA for providing strong leadership that has enabled the private sector to work collectively while strengthening collaboration with government institutions to promote tourism as one of Uganda’s leading economic sectors.
The President also acknowledged the efforts of the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities together with the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) for intensifying the marketing of Uganda as a preferred tourism destination. He highlighted the success of the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE) 2026, which drew international buyers, exhibitors and media from nearly 200 countries, further increasing Uganda’s visibility on the global tourism market.
Museveni reaffirmed government’s commitment to protecting Uganda’s natural attractions, wildlife and biodiversity, noting that conservation remains central to sustaining the country’s tourism industry. He specifically referenced the Rwenzori Mountains, commonly known as the Mountains of the Moon, as one of Uganda’s unique tourism assets that government will continue to safeguard for future generations.
In recognition of his long-standing contribution to Uganda’s tourism development, President Museveni received the Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honour presented during the banquet. The award was received on his behalf by Ms Diana Museveni Kyaremera, who accepted it amid applause from the guests.
Speaking during the event, Uganda Tourism Association President Mrs Yewagnesh Mamo Gesesse Namutebi Biriggwa (YOGI) reaffirmed the association’s commitment to strengthening the tourism sector through collaboration, innovation and strategic leadership.
She noted that UTA will continue implementing its 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, aimed at enhancing cooperation among its fourteen member associations while expanding partnerships with government, development partners and international tourism stakeholders to further grow Uganda’s tourism industry.
The evening also recognised individuals and organisations that have made exceptional contributions to tourism development. Awards presented included the Rhino Awards for distinguished service by outstanding young professionals, the Silverback Awards honouring excellence across different tourism fields, several Distinguished Service Awards, and the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.
Beyond the awards ceremony, the banquet provided an opportunity for networking, celebrating achievements and strengthening relationships among stakeholders across the tourism value chain.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment to work together in promoting Uganda as the Pearl of Africa, with participants expressing confidence that continued collaboration, conservation and investment will further position the country among Africa’s leading tourism destinations.
