Buganda Kingdom Competitions: Sports Minister Launches Mweso [BoardGame] Tournament

As Buganda is preparing for the 31st Kabaka Coronation celebrations, the Sports Minister,Owek.Robert Serwanga has launched the Empaka z’Omweso 2024.
The Minister confirmed the development on Monday, 17,2024 at Bulange Mengo – Kampala and he has also revealed the committee to spearhead the competitions.
The competitions that will start from Ggombolola will be played between 14th-28th July before the grand finale on 16th-November.
“Today we’re here to inform the people of Buganda that we shall have the Mweso [board game] competitions for the year 2024, Mweso is a very important sport in our norms as Buganda, as you know it’s one of the games played during the coronation of Kabaka. ” Minister Owek Robert Sserwanga stated.
” So this year the competition shall start from sub county (Ggombolola) level and each Ggombolola should have a team of six to eight players and then each Sazza will have a team.”
Each Ssaza will have there Mweso Ggombolola competitions on the matchday of its Masaza Cup home encounter.
The nine Counties (Amasaza) that will feature in the opening day include; Bugerere, Buvuma, Bulemeezi, Kabula, Kooki, Kyadondo, Kyaggwe, Mawogola and Mawokota.
Then on 20th, July, Butambala and Ssese shall host their Ggombolola competitions and on 21, July, it will be Buluuli, Busiro, Buweekula, Ggomba and Ssingo.
The climax of Ggombolola competitions will be on 28th, Buddu and Busujju will be in action.
And according to Minister, these competitions will be held on the day when there is Masaza Cup match.
The committee has Hudson Kyagaba as the Chairman and other committee members include Moses Ssekandi, Lydia Ndagire, Godfrey Sserugo and Flugyensio Kyagabba.
Kyagaba is the vice chairperson of Uganda Mweso Association.
Days when the Ggombolola competitions will be held in each Ssaza
14th July
Buvuma, Bugerere, Bulemeezi, Kabula,Kooki, Kyaddondo, Kyaggwe, Mawogola and Mawokota
20th July
Butambala and Ssese
21st-July
Buluuli, Busiro, Buwekula, Gomba and Ssingo
28th-July
Buddu and Busujju.
