Today, Monday 19th, September 2022, at Victoria University (VU) in Kampala, the Higher Education Students Financing Board (HESFB), which is a government body, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with the university aiming to helping its students via a loan scheme.

This students’ loan scheme started way back in 2014, most especially in the chartered/ government aided universities across the country, with over 12780 students have so far benefitting from the programme.

As a result, the Vice Chancellor Victoria University, Mr Muganga Lawrence, continued to highlight the importance of students pursuing higher education.

“If education has a long journey and will never stop, [I think] it’s the right time for students to apply for the loan scheme through the Higher Education Students Financing Board,” Mr Muganga said.

The loan will be paid back in seven years after the completion of the student’s studies. The beneficiaries, for now, are only scientists plus students of tourism and hospitality management.

The Executive Director of HEFSB, Mr Michael Wanyama, advised the students to go for the loans because it’s just few days left, as 15th October 2022 is when applications come to an end.

Therefore, students of Victoria University still have the opportunity to apply before the closure, as per Mr Wanyama.

Victoria University has embraced the students’ loan scheme in order to continue helping ‘poor’ students who are looking for high quality and affordable higher education in the country.

The students’ loan scheme is usually only for students enrolled in selected universities and tertiary institutions.

As a special case, students with disabilities, unlike other applicants, can pursue arts courses via the programme. The rest of the students are only supported on the conditions that they do sciences, and are admitted to an accredited university.

The VU VC also added that since the university is a chartered university, the MoU is confirmation that they are among the leading universities in the country.
