Three Federations AGMs Held Over the Weekend: Netball Approves 23bn Budget, Handball Delegates Trashes Financial Report as Salim Musoke Reclaims Weightlifting Federation top seat

The weekend, starting with Friday was a busy one in sports subsector when three different federations and associations were on course of setting direction for their disciplines for the year 2023/24.

Uganda Netball Federation was the first in the race, they held their constitutional Annual General Assembly on Friday 24th February at Sky View Hotel in Fort Portal City Western Uganda. This has been the second AGM when Hon. Babirye Kityo Sarah is in the top seat of the sport.

Prior to this AGM, corners in the Netball Sport claimed that the AGM will not take part because National Council of Sports is not in good terms with the federation boss and some were mobilizing delegates not to attend the AGM. 

However, all that was watered down when the delegates performed their constitutional right and discussed for the development of the game.

Some of the highlights in that AGM, Babirye confirmed to the delegates that Uganda is now free from all sanctions and fines charged against the country by World Netball for not honoring the world cup qualifiers held in South Africa.

Babirye in her speech to the delegates revealed that now, Uganda is free to play in any ranking tournament, world cup inclusive, this came after the government of Uganda paid over 30m shillings for fine and subscription to world Netball.

National Council of Sports also sent a representative in the AGM which stamped that NCS finally accepted the current leadership of the sport. Anne Nankya was the person who represented the Council and in he speech, she asserted that the federation followed all the steps of their constitution and she is going to report it to her bosses at Lugogo.

Delegates used the chance of Nankya’s presence and asked her to tell her bosses to respect the decisions they made in the 2022 AGM where they approved the constitution amendments.

Netball approved the budget of 23bn shillings and their source of income for the financial year 2023/24 will be the government of Uganda, Sponsorships, grants, subscription from members and participation fees.

However, in the Uganda Handball Federation AGM held at Uganda Olympic Committee premises at Lugogo on Saturday, the delegates refused to approve the 2.85bn shillings budget and to accept the financial report of the financial year 2022/23, the delegates claimed that the report had a lot of errors and gave the finance committee ac grace period of a month to correct the report.

Meanwhile, Salim Musoke maintained his seat as the Uganda Weightlifting Association president, In their elective general assembly held on Saturday at UOC boardroom, Salim Musoke who governed this sport for a collection of over 30 years, he came unopposed plus his other members.

Sam Lubinga, retained the general secretary position, Willy Jagwe elected the vice president administration, Rashid Lubega came unopposed as 2nd vice president Technical, Henry Musubire elected the treasurer for the next four years.

Isa Kanda also returned unopposed as Publicity Secretary and Steven Tamale Ssali as the Organizing Secretary.

UOC Secretary General, Madam Ayikoru Beatrice was the returning officer.
