The 2001 Uganda presidential candidate, Chapaa Karuhanga while condemning Military brutality against journalists yesterday, asserted that military will soon fight each other due to endless misconduct in Army.
When Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert, the National Unity Platform Principal presenting his petition to United Nations Human Rights offices at Kololo yesterday, Military from no way came up and badly beat journalists condemning them from covering the event and at least seven walked away with serious injuries and are still in different health centres nursing wounds.
Among those who were injured include, John Cliff Wamala of NTV, Josephine Namakumbi of NBS, Joseph Sabiti NBS, Amina Nalule of Galaxy FM, Henry Sekanjako and Timothy Murungi from New Vision, Thomas Kitimbo.
A number of political and human Rights activists came out to condemn the ugly scenes and acts did by the security against the forth estate.
Among those people is the former presidential candidate of 2001 general elections,Chapaa Karuhanga.
In an exclusive interview with this website at his home at Katonga Rd in Kampala, Chapaa said that if nothing changes in governance of this country, soon we shall see security fighting each other.
“We call upon government to desist from the belief that they can sustain power by brutalizing Ugandans because for me I know even un armed people can remove a regime dehumanizing the communities because some of those soldiers are Pro people, they are not happy with what is going on.” Chapaa revealing.
If they don’t change, they will find themselves fighting, those who are Pro people and those who are anti people and this is not good for our country, we don’t want to be like Somalia. So I ask them to be on one side and that is for people.”
Chapaa says that since 1996, human Rights violation by Security has been rampant in elections, that every candidate who stand against Museveni and his supporters face brutality from Security. Karuhanga is advising government not believe that fear they mount into public will sustain them in power.
“They should not be feared because they hold guns, surely what they did yesterday and in past days should end here.
“It has been like this since 1996, every election there had been brutalization of candidates who stand against Museveni and their supporters.
CDF of Uganda People’s Defence Force, Gen. David Muhoozi condemned the acts of his men and apologized to Journalists who were injured and promised that the institution will Carter for their bills and replace all what got lost.
At least seven soldiers who got involved in those ugly acts were paraded and are going to be punished. However, Chapaa said that Security is doing the same routine,beating, apologizing, and the cycle continues.
“I wish to condemn their method where they go and brutalize people and them go back and do the same thing, now it has became a routine, leaders of security forces brutalize people of Uganda and when people start to raising up, they go and apologize and tomorrow they do the same thing.“
In one of press briefings, IGP Martin Okoth Ochola in his words before 2021 general elections day said that they will beat journalists until they understand and know that some places are prohibited.
