The Fort Portal Roosters, as the spirited side from Mountain of the Moon University (MMU) are fondly known, failed to crow in the capital after falling 4–2 to Kampala International University (KIU) in the ongoing Pepsi University Football League (UFL) encounter on Thursday.

Despite the loss, MMU’s resilience and determination as debutants in the league continue to earn them respect across Uganda’s university football scene.

The match began on a high note for the visitors, with Ahebwa David silencing the home crowd after just three minutes of play. His early strike unsettled KIU, momentarily raising hopes for the Fort Portal fans. However, the hosts responded furiously, overturning the scoreline within minutes.

KIU’s comeback was led by Doka Arafat, who equalized in the 13th minute, followed by quick-fire goals from Ndabirawo Gerald (16”) and Kalema Nicholus (21”). Though Ahebwa later doubled his tally for MMU in the 40th minute, Ndabirawo’s second goal came in the 89th minute sealed a comfortable win for KIU.

MMU head coach Nyakairu Solomon admitted his side struggled to manage their early momentum.

“We failed to manage our early lead as the boys got excited,” he said after the game. “This is also the first time these boys are playing on an artificial turf, which may have contributed to the loss.”

Despite recording their second defeat of the campaign, Solomon remains upbeat ahead of the remaining two group-stage fixtures against Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) and defending champions Uganda Martyrs University (UMU).

“We are going back home to strategize and make sure we collect some points to place us in a good position as debutants,” he said with optimism.

On the other hand, KIU head coach Akabwai Geoffrey praised his team’s discipline and preparation.

“We have been training for this game because we wanted it badly to push us to a better position on the table as we break off,” he noted.

Though the scoreline favored KIU, the Mountain of the Moon University team once again demonstrated the courage and resilience that have become their hallmark in their debut UFL season. With lessons learned and spirits unbroken, the Roosters now turn their focus to their upcoming home fixtures — determined to make Fort Portal proud.
