Pepsi University Football League: Four Years of Frustration,UNIK Management Urged to Step Up After Another Humiliating Defeat
The University of Kisubi (UNIK) football team is facing mounting criticism after suffering a heavy 4–0 defeat to Kampala University in the Pepsi University Football League (UFL) on Wednesday at the Yes Centre Arena in Nsambya.
The loss marked UNIK’s fourth consecutive season in the UFL without a single victory — a frustrating streak that has left both players and fans questioning the university’s commitment to sports development. So far, UNIK’s best results have been two draws — one against Muni University at home and another with debutants Mountain of the Moon University.
Speaking to media after the match, head coach Jessy Lukoki expressed his disappointment, attributing the team’s continued poor performance to what he described as a lack of institutional support from the university’s management.
“Losing is part of the game, but how you lose matters. This goes back to the management — how have they supported the boys during preparations?” Lukoki lamented.
“We have a young and talented team, one of the best in the UFL, but they need motivation and maximum support from management if they are to produce positive results,” he added.
A reliable source within the university told our reporter that the team’s future now hangs in the balance. There are ongoing internal discussions about whether to continue funding the football program or scrap it altogether due to what some administrators call “a waste of resources.”
The University of Kisubi, run by the Catholic Brothers, also participates in other sports disciplines such as woodball, rugby, and various mind games. However, performance across most sports remains underwhelming — a situation insiders attribute to the absence of a robust sports management structure.
Sports analysts argue that investing in university sports goes beyond chasing trophies. Competitive sports programs are known to boost student engagement, strengthen community spirit, and enhance institutional reputation. For students, active participation in sports promotes physical and mental well-being, academic discipline, and essential life skills such as teamwork and leadership.
With the current state of affairs, UNIK’s administration faces a defining moment: either restructure and invest meaningfully in sports development or risk losing the vibrancy, identity, and student pride that come with a strong university sporting culture.
