Pepsi UFL: No Upcountry Varsity at this Season’s Quarters, Nkumba Makes it at Last

The Pepsi University Football League 11th edition group stage action nears climax and today, 18th November 2023 had three games at different grounds.
Nkumba University got a surprise result from Gulu that propelled them to the quarterfinals. Following a poor start in group E, Nkumba was written off but their second round amazing performance brought them back in the calculation and the must win encounter in Northern Uganda, the result came their way and propelled to quarters.
The beach boys on road beat Gulu 2-1, the result they much wanted, thanks to Biko Bage and Jamal Nsereko 20th and 27th minutes strikes, the only goal for Gulu that came in the 52nd minute came from Micheal Komakech.
St Lawrence University who only wanted a point to seal their qualification, they ran riot against Hassan Wasswa boys at Kavule, SLAU with no mercy, they thumped IUEA 7-0.
Innocent Matenge brace, Fahad Aniku, Ronny Ziraba, Kembo Osman, Ivan Ssemujju and Kaye Peter strikes made the 2019 finalists to seal the group stage with the huge winning margin.
St Lawrence University finished as table leaders of group E with 15 points while Nkumba was at 13 in six games. The two propelled to quarters.
In the other day result, Islamic University in Uganda beat Makerere University Business School 2-0 at their main campus in Mbale, thanks to Shafik Kawooya brace.
Despite the fact that they won all their home games, IUIU failed to qualify to quarters, the 12 points they collected in six games were not enough for them to go through.
This season, no Upcountry University will be at quarterfinals.
Now the eight teams at quarters were confirmed, there are still two games to play to complete the group stage action.
Makerere University Business School, Kampala University, Uganda Christian University, St Lawrence University, Uganda Martyrs University, Bugema University, Nkumba University and Makerere University are the eight teams on quarterfinals.
The group stage action will climax tomorrow, Sunday with two games, Busitema University will be hosting UCU while YMCA will be at home welcoming Victoria University.
