Uganda Martyrs 1-0 St. Lawrence

St Lawrence University learnt nothing from the final they lost in 2019 against Uganda Christian University, from the same venue, they again lost to Uganda Martyrs University at Phillip Omomdi Stadium Lugogo.

Sunny Kaija scored the all-important goal as Uganda Martyrs University edged St. Lawrence University 1-0 to clinch the 2022 Pepsi University Football League title.

In the Saturday bout at the Philip Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, Kaija netted in the 29th minute and it is his goal that proved to be the winner.

The Davis Nono charges lost a second consecutive final at the same venue, all odds were tipping the Late Prof. Mukiibi boys to lift this year’s title due to the performance they have been displaying through the season but it wasn’t the same.

SLAU had many chances to win the game but lost them all including the Bruno Bunyaga efforts that hit the lower pole in the second stanza.

Like champions, Eric Kisuze boys contained the game until they secured their second UFL title and the first came in 2017.

Uganda Martyrs have now joined Makerere University Business School and Kampala University as two-time University Football League titles having won it also in 2017 after beating MUBS 2-0 at Namboole.

On the other hand, St. Lawrence have now lost two back-to-back University Football League finals having lost the previous final to Uganda Christian University.

The above means that St. Lawrence’s wait for their maiden University Football League trophy continues.

On the same day, UCU finished third after winning the third and fourth-place playoff final against MUBS.

UCU won it 4-3 in the post-match penalty shootouts following a 1-1 draw in normal time.
