Pepsi UFL Awards: Were Stands Tall as the Decade’s Best Receive Accolades
The former Uganda Christian University football team skipper as well as custodian, Derrick Were voted as the best player of the Decade when University football league celebrating ten years of existence.
The event where, the current Bright Stars short stopper Derrick Were was voted, was held at Imperial Royale Hotel Kampala on Wednesday evening.
The 2019 University football league winner with UCU and as a captain Were to take the Accolade in honor, beats former KCCA and Nkumba University midfielder, Yasser Mugerwa and former Mbarara University Science and Technology (MUST) forward, Musindo Siraje who also won the best midfielder and forward awards respectively.
Were was also voted the best goalkeeper of the decade, beat Mathias Kigonya who won the league with Kampala University and Kirya Samson (Makerere University).
While speaking with this website, the man who stood tall as a captain and broke the UCU quarter final jinx and won the league in 2019 after beating St Lawrence University at Lugogo, revealed that it was God and teamwork that might have prompted him to win the award.
“I should say, it was God it’s really an honor for me, only out of the three years I played I got this, it’s beyond my expectations, I really want to thank my teammates from the year 2017 to 2019 and UCU for giving me the scholarship, maybe if it wasn’t them, I wouldn’t reach this far.” Excited Were spoke to us.
The other players who got the accolades includes Muwawu Faizal, the league top scorer in 10 years, scored 21 goals, Musindo Siraje was voted the best forward, Yasser Mugerwa the best midfielder, Muganga Douglas from Nkumba University was voted the best defender.
