Netball World Cup Results:

Uganda 74-34 Trinidad and Tobago

Uganda’s national netball team, the She Cranes is up for a bigger task on Monday as they take on World’s number fourth Jamaica in the second preliminary group action at CTICC Arena court one.

After beating Trinidad and Tobago 74-34 in their last fixture of group D on Sunday evening, She Cranes got out of the group as second placed side and propelled to next stage where they will be playing against Jamaica, Wales and hosts South Africa. This group G has six teams, the best three from group D and the best three from group C.

With that arrangement, Uganda will meet Jamaica in their group G opening fixture which will be played on Monday at 5PM Uganda time.

In the game they won today, the team’s captain Irene Eyaru played two positions, that is Goal attacking and wing attacking and finally emerged the best player of the match.

Speaking with She Cranes head coach, Fred Mugerwa Tabale, revealed that he might be tempted to use Eyaru in Wing attacking position on Monday against Jamaica because Norah Lunkuse is not in better position to start the game.

“In the previous game we played, Norah got more tired, and she has been on and off with sickness, so we have to rest her to recover and the other young girl is a bit slow and maybe it’s her first international tournament, she has not caught up very well.” The tactician explaining.

“So we had to change Eyaru to come in the wing Attacking position and if the need be, she will be playing wing attacker.” Mugerwa committed.

About playing wing attacker, the position she rarely play, Irene Eyaru had this to comment.

“For yesterday game, I had really learn a lot of things, we made small mistakes that we had to rectify and today we managed to win.” Says Eyaru. “Of course playing wing attacker is not an easy thing because my best position is GA and GS but still have been playing wing attacker but not often. But there is no much change from the position I am playing.” Irene Eyaru.

That means, Mugerwa is likely to start Eyaru in Wing attacking, have Shadia Nassanga and Mary Nuba Cholhok in shooting D.

This will not be the first time coach Mugerwa is switching players from their cardinal playing positions. In 2022 Commonwealth games, Stella Oyella who went as a goal shooter, she played as a wing attacker and performed.

At this level, the best two teams from each group, will qualify to semifinals while the rest will play classification matches.
