KAYUNGA: Secondary School Teachers Protest Unpaid Salaries

Several teachers in government-aided schools in Kayunga district have protested the non payment of their salaries.

Okwenje Vincent, Headteacher of Busaana SS, notes that the situation is annoying and unfair, and is wondering why they have not been paid.

Mr Okwenje while in the meeting held on 1st November held at teacher’s headquarters in Busaana Subcounty  says that they are suffering from delays in payments of their monthly salaries, but the authorities have continuously snubbed them and failed to explain why they are not getting the salaries.

Ms Lillian Tiko, one of the affected teachers, says that she last recieved her salary in July, and is currently struggling with her survival, yet she is required to offer services at school without any compromise.

Ms Deborah Nambubi, a teacher at Kibuzi SS, who has also missed salary since August 2022, indicated that they have repeatedly sought an audience with the Town Clerk to file their concerns, but their efforts have not yielded any positive results, as they were instead tossed up and down.

The aggrieved teachers have threatened to lay down their tools should they fail to get their salaries before the end of this week (on Friday 4th, November 2022).

The Town Clerk noted that the issue of salary payment for teachers in Kayunga has escalated, as all secondary teachers haven’t been paid, and has asked the Central Government to positively respond to the teachers’ cry.

The Town Clerk attributed the delays to the increase of salary for the science teachers. He added that nobody is deliberately denying teachers their salary, assuring the teachers that the problem is not a ‘local’ problem.

He concluded by asking the teachers to be patient, emphasizing that the Government of Uganda is committed to improving the welfare of both Arts and Science teachers.
