Uganda Prisons Netball Club captain Christine Namulumba Kango has been named the Fortebet Real Stars Netball Player of the Month for May following her outstanding performances both locally and regionally.

The awarding ceremony was held on Tuesday at Naijing Restaurant in Kampala, where Namulumba emerged victorious ahead of KCCA’s Margaret Baagala and Police NC’s Joan Nantumbwe.

Namulumba played a pivotal role in Uganda Prisons’ historic triumph at the East Africa Netball Club Championship held in Nairobi, Kenya. The Prisons side stunned regional giants National Insurance Corporation (NIC) Netball Club twice during the tournament — first in the group stages and later in the final — to secure their long-awaited championship title.

The victory marked a major milestone for the club, which had gone several years without lifting the regional trophy.

Speaking after receiving the accolade, Namulumba dedicated the award to her team and supporters.

“I am very grateful for this other milestone. I thank the Commissioner of Prisons, Canon Dr. Johnson Byabashaija, for granting us the opportunity to represent the country in the game of netball. My teammates, coaches, and my friend Denis Mayega, who always motivates me whenever I am down,” she said.

This is the third time Namulumba has won the Fortebet Real Stars award, having previously claimed it in December 2022 and April 2023.

In the football category, Young Africans SC midfielder Allan Okello scooped the award after edging SC Villa’s Charles Lwanga and Uganda U-17 captain Owen Mukisa.

Chess youngster Alvin Muhirwa claimed the chess accolade ahead of Jacinta Mbabazi and Ronald Wabwire, while Olympic medalist Peruth Chemutai won the athletics award unopposed.
