FWSL: The Sharks Swallow Queens’ Pride to Lift the Trophy in Honor
Finally the epic 2021/22 season of FUFA Women’s Super League climaxed on Friday with five fixtures on five different grounds around the country.
She Corporate Football Club, the side that spent much of its days on top of the table finally lifted their maiden trophy since inception in 2015. The determined Sharks only wanted a point in their last fixture to win the title to which they achieved against Kampala Queens.
The much anticipated encounter honored at MUBS Arena in Nakawa ended in a goalless draw that helped the Sharks to top the table with only a goal difference against their close competitors in Kampala Queens who also finished the league at 39 points in 18 games.
This game went into records of women football in Uganda as the most physically watched encounter, though it was also on Fufa tv.
Since they came for a point in their last fixture, ISSA Yussuf girls fought for it and never allowed Kampala Queens to achieve their target of getting a win, to which they much wanted.
Phionah Nabbumba, who in his post match interview revealed that she was close to quit football, was named the Most Valuable player of the season, the girl had been a pivot in Corporate midfield, she managed to scored five goals and made eight assists.
“First of all, I thank fellow players, we worked as a team and achieved what we have been yearning for, we came into this game with two advantages, a win and a draw were both working for us, when a goal refused to come in first half, we resorted to a point and we achieved it.” Said Phiona Nabbumba.
About her motivation this season; ” A number of people have been behind my success, they advised me, I was going to quit football when I was dropped on national team, but they talked to me and brought me back to football.” She revealed.
Daphine Nyayenga voted as the best goalkeeper, the custodian finished the league with 11 clean sheets in 16 games, while Rines SS WFC who survived relegation on judgement day, voted the fairplay team while Fazila Ikwaput of Lady Doves finished as the top scorer with 15 goals, tied with Hasifah Nassuna of UCU Lady Cardinals.
She Maroons, the 2020/21 Elite league champions returned to their former league as well as Tooro Queens.
