Education: Covid a Blessing in Disguise For Kayunga, Performance in PLE Tripled
In the recent past, Kayunga District has been among the poorly performing districts in national examinations at all levels from primary to advanced level (Upper secondary).
The performance was expected to worsen in 2020 due to COVID-19 outbreak that disturbed the education system and affected more the village schools whose scholars hardly access online reading materials.
However, the Primary Leaving Examination PLE results portrayed something different from what was predicted in Kayunga District.
Since the District became independent from Mukono District in 2000, Kayunga had never performed like they did in 2020.
The District has recorded a record number of 621 first grades in PLE making 2020 as the best performing year compared to other years.
In comparison to previous performance, in 2019, the district scored 260 first grades and in 2018 it had only 150.
Covid could be a blessing in disguise for Kayunga district in Education sector. Before this record performance, Kayunga last had it’s highest performance in 2016 when they secured 366 first grades.
When this website tried to reach at the District Education Officer, Madam Alice Doya failed to give a comment on what her department has done better to record this performance.
The Kayunga District Labour and Productivity Officer, Collins Kafeero Kiggundu attributed this amazing performance on the pressure the district put on teachers especially those in public schools and their salaries coming in time compared to previous years.
“There are a number of factors that limit the performance of children and we don’t have control of, COVID-19, home economics, lack of learning equipments among others, but I want to thank all the teachers for good work done, I saw schools like Tente taking lead in Public schools, Mixed, Girls and Ndeeba C/U and many more keep up the spirit, Education Department and CAO for paying teachers before 27th every month strengthened many souls to work plus the good leadership.” Collins Kafeero explained to this website.
