All Africa Badminton Senior Championship: Shamika Fadilah Makes Johannesburg ‘Bend Over’, Lifts Gold Medal

After not performing well in team events of the All Africa Badminton Senior Championship climaxed on Sunday, where team Uganda stopped at quarter finals, Ugandans put up brilliant performance in the individual events.

Uganda’s Shamika Fadilah Muhammed, won a gold medal in the Championship after beating South Africa’s and Africa’s seed four, Johanita Scholtz two sets to one on final. 

Shamika first went down in the first set losing it 21-14, but in second set, the 17 year old star beat the former, 21-14 before sealing her victory with a 21-16 win.

“I am really, really grateful for this medal, I would like to thank my parents, UBA, all the coaches who are behind me and my fellow players and I will keep working hard.” Says Shamika after winning the first gold medal for Uganda in this continent Championship.

Though they didn’t get any medal in team events, team Uganda performed better in individual events, and Uganda’s male seed one, Brian Kasirye won a bronze medal in men’s singles, while Husina Kobugabe and Gladys Mbabazi won a bronze medal in women’s double.

This tournament acted as a precursor for team Uganda since Uganda International Championship is on this week starting, this Wednesday 22nd February, 2023 at Lugogo Indoor Arena and according to Uganda Badminton Association president, Annet Nakamya revealed that Uganda will field at least 90 players.
