Africa Volleyball Championship: Our Target is Podium Finish-Lady Cranes

Uganda National Volleyball Women’s team, the Lady Cranes feel ready to take the mantle at the continental level and target set is Podium finish.

The team under the custody of experienced tactician, Lakony Tonny Peter started her preparations for the 2023 Africa Nation’s championship in early April and they think, they are ready to challenge on the continental.

Speaking to this website at the team’s training camp at International School of Uganda in Lubowa, one of the debutants, Umuhoza Flavia (setter) revealed that their target as players is to have a Podium finish in the championship that are starting on 14th August 2023 in Younde Cameroon.

“I believe we’re ready to take on the challenge” confident Umuhoza Flavia states.

“As a debutant I don’t know what’s there but I don’t have pressure, because I taken on pressure in the past, I think am ready, I have a strong team behind me, the coaches I believe, they are going to back me up and even when I feel shaky, they will be there.

Me personally am going for the last game, like a final if we can make it, as a setter I definitely push my players, and I believe that’s going to be my song from the get go like you people it’s going to be a game at time, because we need to win one game at a time but personally it is to be at the podium maybe on the first team of the tournament and that will be an achievement.” Says Umuhoza Flavia.

However, one of the most capped players on the team, Amuron Eunice and the head coach, Lakony Tonny Peter asserted that that might be unrealistic target but they are going to to take on a game at a time and want to win the first match, and a quarter final finish will not be bad for a youthful team they have.

“we have lots of new faces, youngers are on board, almost 80% of the team are the younger girls and it’s a great opportunity for them to go out there and experience how it is like to play at the continental level and will help us as individuals to grow and grow the sport. This team is a young team, we have raw talent but with coach Tonny I have faith and believe tht we are going to be competitive. This time round we have taller girls, people with strength, so it’s balanced up.

Our target is to win our first match, whichever team we’re going to play, we need to play at least that is a bare minimum.” Amuron Eunice,one of the most capped players at the current team.

“We have had preparation for a long team, done from April but we have been doing once a week, because we have had a league in that Period but we have managed to keep it going, credit to the girls who have made it to the last twelve, We have started with a team of 24 and trimmed it to 12.
“We think we have a very good team that will be with us for a long time “

“Our realistic target, first of all is to perform to our best abilities, if it takes us to the medal bracket, Welland good but that is unrealistic but we want to make sure that we make a foundation that we can be able to compete when host the zone V qualifiers of all Africa games early next year, so this is something we’re going to use as springboard for the women’s team.” Head Coach Lakony Tonny Peter.

The team is expected to be flagged off on Saturday at National Council of Sports premises.

The tournament is slated to take place between 14th and 25th August 2023, it’s a round robin format, the four best teams will qualify to semifinals and the champion will represent Africa in World Cup.
