Serious House Cleaning, UNBS Reveals List of Certified Maize Milling Companies

Kampala: The Uganda National Bureau of Standards has released a list companies in Uganda that are eligible to deal in maize milling Business.
It should be remembered that a few weeks back, the Kenyan government lifted the ban on maize imports from Uganda but with strict conditions so as to curb importation of goods that are below standards.
Exporters of maize are required to be registered and all consignments entering Kenya must have certificates of conformity on aflatoxin levels.
In a statement released by UNBS, a list of Companies that are certified to deal in maize milling business in Uganda has been issued.
“UNBS has received applications from over 59 maize flour dealers who are in the process of certification. ” UNBS stated.
Maize Millers are to make sure they meet the set standards to ensure they minimize maize contamination.
“Avoid using unacceptable pest control methods like spraying with pesticides and insecticides which contaminate the maize flour. Make use of traditional rat traps and other pest control methods that do not contaminate the flour in stores”
“Avoid storing maize flour directly on the floor but rather than on pallets to avoid contact with damp flour that can lead to moulds and aflatoxin contamination of the maize.” UNBS Noted.
According to UNBS, foreign materials should not be in the flour and thus urged Millers to make sure they do avoid that.
” Millers should ensure that there’s no foreign things like stones, wooden particles, metal,hair and nails in the flour.” UNBS stated.
UNBS Noted that it is vital that the equipment used should be cleaned often.
“Maize flour millers are advised to ensure that the business premises, equipment and stores are regularly cleaned and the cleaning records should be well kept” UNBS said.
