Ronald Mayinja On His Song ‘Mzee Akalulu’: “I Was Frustrated By Then”

Ugandan artiste, Ronald Mayinja, who hails from Gomba in Central Uganda, had a reflective interview with a Voice of Bugerere reporter in Makindye, stressing to each and every Ugandan to learn and know how they should separate music from their products.
Ronald Mayinja, in the last general election in 2022, had an interest in politics, and was ready to contest to be a Member of Parliament (MP) in Gomba with the National Unity Platform (NUP) card which was unfortunately not given to him and was instead given to his competitor.
This deeply annoyed him, hence releasing a song called ‘Mzee Akalulu’, which totally contradicted the message in another song called ‘Byazemu’.
This, as a result, annoyed very many Ugandans all across the country, requiring Ronald Mayinja to offer a public apology.
“I am sorry to those who were [and still are] very angry with me [from] during that time of politics in 2021,” Mayinja apologetically said.
He also added that the media has played a big role in either depriving or demolishing Ugandan music. As per Mayinja, literally every sector in Uganda should be in their original position in order to develop Ugandan music.
“Music is bigger than just the music, because any damage done by the artiste is always hard and very expensive to cover up,” Mayinja said.
“Therefore, all stakeholders in this [music] industry should respect our songs because they are educative songs,” Mayinja added.
“In this capacity, we should acknowledge that the media is the final consumer for everything in the world. So, the audience should follow the media but not the media to follow the audience,” Mayinja stressed.
Mayinja seemed to imply that to develop Ugandan music, we should stop fighting against musicians and their songs, and instead the media should be objective to the content, which can help the artistes to give out good content.
In Mayinja’s eyes, if the media keeps following the audience, then the music industry will take the wrong direction. This is because media acts as leaders to be followed, and therefore media should stand strong to oppose wrong things as far as music is concerned.
