Pepsi University Football League:Gui Double Downs MUST as Uganda Martyrs Go Level with KU

Uganda Martyrs University skipper Obed Gui Ronald produced a captain’s performance, scoring twice to inspire the defending champions to a commanding 2-0 victory over Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) in the Pepsi University Football League on Sunday at MUST Grounds, Mbarara.

Gui’s brace not only sealed the Saints’ second win of the campaign but also lifted them level on seven points with Group A leaders, Kampala University (KU).

The match started with intensity as both sides displayed attacking intent, but it was Gui who broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, rising highest to nod home Yiga Steven’s perfectly delivered outswinging cross from the right flank.

MUST responded with determination, creating two clear chances through Okongo Moses and Lomuro Joseph, but both forwards squandered their opportunities, leaving the visitors in control at the interval.

After the restart, Uganda Martyrs tightened their grip on proceedings, with Jjonga Nicolas dictating the tempo in midfield and Yiga Steven causing persistent problems down the wing. Their dominance paid off in the 64th minute when Ogen Gabriel split open the defense with a precise pass that Gui latched onto, calmly slotting past goalkeeper Tukwatanise Gad to double the lead and seal the win.

Despite continued pressure from Kisuze Eric’s men, including late efforts from Walakira Christopher and Yiga Steven, the scoreline remained unchanged until the final whistle.

The result saw Uganda Martyrs University join Kampala University at the summit of Group A with seven points, while MUST suffered their first defeat of the season. The Mbarara side had earlier drawn 1-1 with Kampala International University before thrashing University of Kisubi 4-0 at home.

Both teams will return to action next year to complete their remaining group fixtures.

The Pepsi University Football League continues on Monday, with Kabale University seeking their first win of the season against high-flying Muteesa I Royal University.
