No Need of Celebrating Women’s Day Without Own Freedom, Police Arrests NUP Women
Every 8th of March, Uganda joins the rest of the world to celebrate the International Women’s day in appreciation of the value of women on the planet.
On Wednesday, March 8, Uganda, Africa and the world to celebrate International Women’s Day with pomp and ceremony. The national celebrations took place at Kaaro Secondary School, Kiruhura District.
And the theme for International Women’s Day 2023 is, “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.”
The theme for Women’s Day is aligned to the theme of the 67th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, namely, “Innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls”. The Commission will meet from March 6 to 17.
International Women’s Day was celebrated for the first time in 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. In 1913 it was agreed that March 8 be designated as a day to mark the big event. The UN celebrated International Women’s Day for the first time in 1975.
Those celebrating with the government were busy enjoying but those from the opposition political side, to be specific, National Unity Platform ladies, at least 11 were arrested at Wandegeya.
These women went in protest against the illegal arrests of their brothers and husbands, torture. The women said that they can’t go in celebrations when they don’t have own freedom.

The celebrations came in time when Uganda is in challenge, most of National Unity Platform supporters are in jail, others don’t know their whereabouts and others are dead but till now, the government have fail to produce report about the abducted and the dead Ugandans.
