Netball: Linda Muzigo Counts on Home Support, League-Driven Confidence as UCU Angels Chase AUUS Title

With the 2025 Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) Games fast approaching, Uganda Christian University (UCU) have made their intentions clear to reclaim the netball trophy that slipped through their fingers by the narrowest of margins in 2023.

The UCU Angels, who will also be hosts of this year’s tournament, are sharpening their preparations with renewed focus and belief ahead of the 20th edition of the AUUS Games, slated for December 18–23 in Mukono. The memories of the 2023 final still linger, when UCU fell 51–50 to Victoria University after extra time in a dramatic masterclass display that crowned Victoria as champions.

Determined to rewrite that history, the Angels have intensified their training programme, drawing confidence from their involvement in the national netball league. Team captain Linda Muzigo believes this has given UCU a competitive edge they lacked two years ago.

“The team has been training consistently,” Muzigo explained. “Since we participate in the national league, we use it as a training ground to improve our coordination and identify areas that need more concentration. The challenges we face in the league build our confidence, and that confidence will motivate us as we aim to win the trophy.”

Muzigo also pointed to lessons learned from the previous edition, noting that circumstances were different in 2023.

“In 2023, the netball league was not on, and that affected us. This time, we are coming with a very positive mindset and a lot more confidence,” she added.

During a training session held on Tuesday, head coach Nelson Bogere was seen emphasizing tactical execution and team coordination, with particular attention given to the middle court — an area expected to play a decisive role in high-pressure matches.

While UCU will enjoy home advantage, the Angels are under no illusions about the challenge ahead. Kampala University, bronze medalists in 2023, and Nkumba University are tipped as serious contenders. Bugema University, Makerere University, MUBS, and St. Lawrence University are also expected to field competitive sides in what promises to be a tightly contested netball competition.

Overall, 24 universities have confirmed participation in the 2025 AUUS Games, underlining the growing competitiveness of university sport in Uganda.
