Netball Commonwealth Games 2022: Shadia Nassanga, Nuba most Accurate as She Cranes Thump Trinidad and Tobago

Bouncing from a 53-40 defeat against world champions, New Zealand, Uganda’s national netball team, the She Cranes comfortably beat Trinidad and Tobago 62-28 in their second commonwealth games fixture.

In this game honored at NEC Arena- Birmingham Exhibition Centre on Sunday evening, team’s captain Peace Proscovia got no chance to play but her charges exhibited a brilliant performance.

The KCCA Netball club forward Shadia Nassanga who came off the bench after second quarter, was the most accurate player on the day. Out of 25 attempts, she converted 25 which made her the best shooter on the court.

Mary Nuba’s conversion rate was at 88% [28/32] while tht of Irene Eyaru was at 82% [9/11].

Statistically, Shadia Nassanga was also the best assist make, she made 13 of them for the shortest time she was on the court.

Uganda won all the four quarters, but performed better in the second and last quarter.

In the first quarter, Uganda beat Trinidad and Tobago 13-06, 20-07 in second quarter, third quarter went 14-9 and the last quarter it was 15-6, which means Uganda never allowed the Islanders to have double digits in a single quarter.

The result proved that Uganda is an improved side compared to the previous three years the two sides last met. The two sides last met in 2019 in World Cup held in Liverpool, the game ended 54-57 in favor of Uganda.

On the day, coach Fred Mugerwa managed to make changes in line compared to that started against New Zealand, the first seven had one change, Mary Nuba Cholhok started ahead of Peace Proscovia.

He also made a number changes where we saw, Margret Baagala getting her debut game in commonwealth, she replaced Jesca Achan after first quarter though she later went off in the third quarter for Jesca to return. Norah Lunkuse and Hanisha Muhammed got a chance to play after replacing Stella Oyella and Shaffie Nalwanja respectively. 

The win maintained Uganda in the third place with two points in two games, Uganda’s next game is on Tuesday, 2nd, August 2022 playing against the hosts, England.

To qualify to semifinals, Uganda needs to win all her remaining three games.
