My Motherland Is No Longer a safe haven, Stella Nyanzi, Family Seek Asylum In Kenya
One of the Museveni Critic and a former Kampala Woman Member Parliament aspirant, Dr. Stella Nyanzi fled out of Uganda to neighboring country Kenya citing insecurity in Uganda.
The Ugandan medical anthropologist, feminist, queer rights activist, and scholar of sexuality, family planning, and public health. She was arrested in 2017 for insulting the Ugandan president and by the time she left the country to Kenya, her life and the family has been in danger according to her.
Via her facebook page, Nyanzi posted that going into exile is not a sign of defeat nor surrender but it’s one the small victory she acquired from President Museveni’s government, that once slapped her with travel ban.
“Exile is neither defeat nor surrender. Having once been slapped with a travel ban by the Museveni dictatorship, it is no small victory for me to have successfully departed from Uganda with my children.” The outspoken Nyanzi wrote.
“When I was a child, my father and mother fled from dictator Iddi Amin Dada in Uganda to Kenya with my sisters and I. We were refugees in Nairobi for a couple of years, until a semblance of safety returned back to the motherland.” She added.
In a country where kidnapping, torture and inhumane actions are the order of the day, Nyanzi is saying that her seeking refuge in Kenya is not a shame because a dead woman can not contribute to the fight for freedom.
“It is striking that I have returned with my children to Kenya. There is no shame in seeking safety and security from political persecution. A dead woman cannot contribute to the liberation struggle. A detained woman cannot contribute to the fight for freedom. Alas, I am alive to live one more day to fight for freedom and liberty.” Nyanzi speaks.
It’s not only Nyanzi who departed her family out of the country, prior to general elections in January, the former presidential candidate, Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine fled his kids to USA for their safety.
In the previous Parliamentary sitting, the member of August House, squeezed Minister for Internal Affairs, Jeje Odong to explain to Ugandans, the rampant disappearance of Ugandans especially in Central Uganda.
