Kampala University Handball Teams Step Up Preparations Ahead of AUUS Games

Kampala University’s men and women handball teams have intensified their preparations ahead of the 20th edition of the AUUS Games, scheduled for December 18–23 at Uganda Christian University in Mukono.

The institution, a consistent contender in the competition, is targeting an improved performance after finishing with silver medals in both categories at the previous edition—losing to Ndejje University in the men’s final and Victoria University in the women’s.

Head coach Frank Ssemuyaba expressed confidence in the team’s steady progress, attributing the improvement to regular league action which has boosted overall fitness.

“We have an improvement—the players have been playing in the league, so their fitness levels are a bit okay. We’re working more on shooting, and we have a program to improve our defense and endurance. Last edition we were in the medal bracket, but this season we are focusing on winning the double,” Ssemuyaba said.

Women’s team captain Nakirijja Harriet echoed her coach’s optimism, noting that the team is growing stronger mentally and physically.

 “We’re improving our energy and removing game fear. The toughest team I expect to meet is Ndejje University, but the good thing is that we face them in the league, so we know how to match them,” she noted.

For the men’s team, captain Mujuni Johnson outlined a rigorous training routine designed to sharpen the team’s weak points from the last edition.

“We start with roadwork to build endurance, then during the day we work on shooting and defense. Last edition our shooting wasn’t good, so we’re trying to fix that,” Mujuni explained.

With both teams brimming with confidence and pushing to correct past mistakes, Kampala University heads into the Mukono-hosted Games with clear intentions—turning last year’s silver into a historic double gold.
