Independent Kampala Central parliamentary aspirant and Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) president Moses Muhangi has held high-profile talks with global boxing stars Deontay Wilder and Manny Pacquiao in Dubai, conversations that insiders say could mark a turning point for Uganda’s boxing revival.
The meeting brought together Muhangi, the former WBC heavyweight champion Wilder, and boxing legend Manny Pacquiao also a former senator of the Philippines around a shared agenda: strengthening boxing structures, talent development and international collaboration. Sources familiar with the engagement say discussions focused on the state of Ugandan boxing, pathways for technical support, and the prospect of future visits by the world-renowned fighters to Uganda.

Beyond symbolism, the talks reportedly explored practical support, including equipment donations, coaching exchanges and technical assistance aimed at accelerating the sport’s recovery and professional standards. For Uganda’s boxing fraternity, the engagement with two of the sport’s most recognizable figures has ignited optimism at a time when rebuilding efforts are gathering momentum.
Muhangi, who is contesting the Kampala Central seat as an independent in the 2026 general elections, has anchored his campaign on community engagement, sports development and youth digital empowerment. He has been vocal about the need for targeted investment in sports infrastructure particularly boxing gyms and netball courts arguing that accessible facilities are critical to nurturing talent and steering young people toward productive pathways.
Complementing his sports agenda, the UBF boss who took over as the president in 2018 has pledged to champion government-backed digital hubs across Kampala.
“The centres would offer free, reliable internet access to help young people tap into online work and skills training, positioning the city’s youth for participation in the global digital economy.” Muhangi stated in one of his campaign messages to the people of Kampala Central.
Muhangi’s parliamentary bid has drawn support from boxing coaches, fighters and musicians, underscoring his deep ties to the sports and creative communities.
He enters a crowded and competitive race that includes NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, NRM’s Kampala Minister Minsa Kabanda, PFF’s Abdallah Walangalira, DF’s Nakuya Aidah, Abraham Luzzi and independent candidate Suzan Kushaba, all seeking to unseat incumbent MP Muhammad Nsereko of EPU.
