Kabaddi Slowly Turning a Serious Sport in Uganda, Brings IWA On Board
In Uganda especially central region, the word Kabaddi sounds funny to many, but it’s a name for an indian originated Sport, it was established in Uganda in 2017 by now the Federation’s General Secretary Edgar Mujuni.
The Sport that was approved by National Council of Sports in 2018, today the federation moved a step into the heart of corporate world.
The Kabaddi Federation of Uganda, India Women Association Uganda unveiled a one year partnership deal.
At the event held at Kati Kati Restaurant Lugogo on Saturday afternoon, Edgar Mujuni, the Federation’s General Secretary revealed that Indian Women Association have come on board to sponsor the Women’s National Team, the She Gladiators and the deal is worth 10M for one year.
“Indian Women Association Uganda to sponsor uganda Kabaddi women national team for one year.
They have started by Branding the team (She Gladiators) with training kits two sets, Match day uniforms two sets, track suits, t-shirts, Kabaddi shoes, canvases, boob tubes, knees and elbow pads.” Excited Mujuni said before adding. “It’s very big for Kabaddi as a sport, these are the things we really wanted as a sports discipline and as a sector, it motivates players and help to bring more funders on Board, it is a big stepping stone for us.“
Katongole Singh, the Chairperson Indian Women Association Uganda, Board of Trustees sad it’s their object as indians to develop the game that originated from their country.
“Indian Women Association is pleased to join hands in supporting the national team of Kabaddi of Uganda.
Kabaddi is a game which has originated from India, we feel it’s our objective to support the game, we have to popularize it in Uganda.
So for start we have injected in 10M for one year, but the contract is renewable depending on the performance of the ladies and the relationship we shall be having with the federation.”.
Neala Hudda,the Treasurer of IWA and represented the Association’s chairperson, Suman Venketesh revealed why Indian women decided to support She Gladiators.
“I was here last time when these girls showcased their talents, they inspired me, they were playing very well, and their leaders were saying they need sponsorship, so the next day I went to my chairperson and told her that let’s give support to these girls, to which she accepted.
That’s why we are here today, she did not come because some illness.” Neala Hudda Said.
According to Singh, IWA is an NGO that deal with the Welfare of Women and Children, not only for Indians but of all races in Uganda.
