I can’t Drive a Luxurious Wheel when My People are Dying on Streets, Bbaale Legislator, Tebandeke to Switch Car’s Money to Buy Ambulance
According to Director of Communications at Parliament, Mr Chris Obore, the Government of Uganda has started remitting Shs200 million to each of the 529 legislators and the 26 ex-officio members of the 11th Parliament, to enable them buy cars.
The cash is part of the string of entitlements that legislators are entitled to throughout their five-year term.
“That is true. We got a release to give members their money which you know is a ritual that each member has to be given money to buy a car. There is nothing to hide there. It is a once in five years’ period benefit that members are going to get,It is Shs200 million and it is what the other Parliament got. In other words they are getting what the 10th Parliament got.” Mr Obore told Daily Monitor via a telephone interview.
This money came in a time when Ugandans are crying out to government to buy them vaccine and have them covid relief money to which the government is saying it doesn’t have currently.
But news on Tuesday landed in the ears of common Ugandans that their legislators have received money and they were not happy with the government’s way of doing things.
The Bbaale Constituency legislator, Hon. Charles Tebandeke revealed to this website that he accepted to receive the 200M but he is not to use it for it’s primary purpose.
The outspoken Tebandeke says, he can’t be driving a luxurious vehicle when his constituents are dying of hunger, lack transport means to take them to hospital, walking on bad roads.
So he is going to use the money to buy the first ever modern ambulance that will carry to patients to hospitals and health centers.
“I am going to sacrifice my vehicle money to buy Ambulance to my people, it’s of no importance to ride a luxurious car when my people are dying of COVID-19 without transport to hospitals, dying of hunger, have no clean water, dying on roads helplessly.” Hon. Charles Tebandeke.
” Since it’s inception, Bbaale Constituency never been with even a poor ambulance, Expecting mothers die on their way to hospitals, this really pains me always, so I decided that all my money to buy Ambulance to save lives. ” He added.
Some section of population have been advising the MPs to return back the money to government custody buy Tebandeke has another view.
“In the first place if our government was considerate, it wouldn’t send this year’s car money to MPs, it would be used to buy Vaccine and giving it to people who are currently dying of hunger because they have nothing to eat. But since this government is not genuine, full of thieves and mafias, I can’t take back the money because they will steal it and my Bbaale Constituents will end up getting nothing, I instead buy them Ambulance that can be useful to them.”
For starters, the government set aside only 53bn shillings to give to 50117 vulnerable households compared to over 100bn sent to 529 MPs and 26 Ex-officio to buy cars.
Bbaale Constituents are expected to receive their Ambulance not late than next week.
Hon. Tebandeke is the 5th member of Parliament representing Bbaale Constituency, succeeding Hon. George Nsamba Kumama.
