Even in this modern era where the world is now a global village, some people’s mindsets are far away from change especially towards girl child.
Many still believe that a girl child is a minor spice in the society and deliberately refused to empower them even when the have potential to add value to the nation.
With that simple background and research, an organization in name of Girl Up, had to be established in 2012 to brainstorm the community that women and girl child also have potential to develop the country if not segregated.
This organization that has its head office at Mutungo, Nakawa Division, Kampala joined other organizations from different parts of the country with support from Plan International to drive a program called NI-Yetu Youth Program that is looking at empowering Adolescents and youths to demand for and fulfill their rights to sexual reproductive health and gender based violence protection.
Through this program, since 2015, the Organisation that basically operates from Kampala and it’s five divisions, have reached out to over 9000 youths and they have testimony that the mindsets started to change in these youths.
Yesterday, this organisation through it’s field officers in partnership with Makindye Division, they reached out to over 100 youths who gathered at Weyonje Grounds-Kibuli and had a gender Dialogue where the girls and boys expressed their fear and feelings towards each sex.
Project Officer, Natukunda Claire while talking to this website, she had this to express.
“The community has a feeling that what boys do, girls can’t do which is a wrong mindset, today we worked hand in hand with Makindye division to challenge the negative social norms within the communities to share knowledge with them that what boys do, the girls can, this should not affect us in our daily life, today we managed to reach out to 102 youths, and they also had chance to play Netball together. ” Natukunda Claire told this website.
According to Natukunda, their next outreach will be in Banda next week on Tuesday.
