DDA Reveals New Measures to Ensure Quality Milk Production

Kampala: Dr. Michael Kansiime the Executive Director, Dairy Development Authority on Wednesday addressed in response to claims of unsafe milk production in Uganda. 

At Uganda Media Centre, Kampala, the  executive director Mr Kansiime revealed the new measures that will ensure the quality and the safety of milk in Uganda.

Among the guidelines the government came up with through Diary Development Authority include
✓ Enforcement of diary standards and regulations. 
✓ Conducting analysis and on-spot testing of milk and milk products to ensure that they are fit for human consumption. By doing this the government has provided mobile diary development authority laboratories that are equipped with Ultra High performance liquid chromatography and CHARM II.

Over 2.8 billion litres of milk produced in for utilization and 80.2 percent is marketed across the boarders,19.8 percent is consumed at the farm and 66 percent of the marketed milk is sold unprocessed of which 10 percent is sold door to door and 56 percent is sold at sales outlets.

“There is increased production in Uganda from 2018, 2.51 billion litres by 2021 has  rised to 2.81 billion litres.”

In the same line, the executive director has informed the general public to take milk as they can for a better life.

“Uganda diary sector has grown exponentially over years and its products continue to gain increased demand and consumption within and beyond the boarders.”

According to Director, Uganda is exporting milk products mainly to regions like; East Africa Community, SADC, COMESA, Nepal, Oman, Malaysia, Dubai and other nations. 

The most exported products include: milk powder, yoghurt, cheese, butter, ghee, butter oil, UHT milk, casein and whey protein powder
