Cycling: Ladies’ ‘Choice’, Azizi Wins Maiden Together We Can Cycling Uganda Competition
The younger energetic cyclist, and the ladies choice in the areas of Mukono and Kayunga, Azizi Ssempijja won the first edition of the Together We Can Cycling Uganda Limited Competition held at Lwanyonyi-Kiwala Village, Nama Sub county in Mukono District.
Ssempijja who is the current champion of national championships, from the fifth position before the clock of last rap, managed to finish the first at the end of 51km race.
The ladies at the finishing line could not hide their excitement immediately they learnt that their one and only, Azizi Ssempijja won the race.
The event that was organized by Together We Can Uganda Cycling, the management that came in place to bring together, the cyclists, event organizers and the top leadership of the sport, it has attracted 18 cyclists from different parts of the nation, some from Mukono, Kayunga, Jinja, Masaka and Kampala.
Aziz as the winner won 200000/- with a trophy and a gold medal, the first runners up, Biyinzika Davis from Masaka took 150,000/- with a silver medal, while Waswa Fred aka Lukoba also from Masaka came the third and walked away with 100,000/- and a bronze medal.
While speaking to this website, the Managing Director of Together We Can Uganda Cycling, Ssebakaaki Solomon aka King Solomon revealed that they have come in existence to create awareness to public that cycling is a sport like others and the cyclists represent Uganda in different international competitions.
“This race was organized to officially open the Together We Can Cycling Uganda Limited, and it’s main role is to bring together the cyclists, race organizers and fans, at many occasions, these cyclists represent the country but people can’t get to know, so we came to spread the game through using the media.” He explained.
“Not like other sports, the cyclists invest in themselves, it’s them to buy own bikes and yet they are expensive, but when the public gets to know the hurdles they go through, they can one way or the other be helped because they also lift the Uganda flag.” He added.
‘King Solomon’ asserted that their next big event will be hosted in December this year at Lubiri Mengo and it will be a competition amongst, Kingdoms in Uganda ND the winner will be taking a land title.
Azizi Ssempijja, the race winner revealed that persistence and determination helped him to win the race despite the fact that his bike got a mechanical problem with a rap to go.
“I have been well prepared for the race, because the organizers communicated to us very early and it helped me to train well ahead of this race.” Ssempijja Azizi told this website.
He added, “Yes I got some challenges, one of my wheels got a problem and I had to change but remember, in this race they refused Bodabodas to go with us, so I had to communicate with my mechanic at the starting point to bring me another wheel but since I had confidence in me, I persisted and finally I won the race.”
Ssempijja who by whisker failed to represent Uganda in 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth games, revealed to this website that he will use such events to prepare himself for the forthcoming All Africa Games.
