Church of Uganda Joins WWF To Fight Against Environment Degradation
Kampala: The struggle to reclaim the nature and favourable environment to all mankind and animals continues and Church of Uganda has joined the World Wide Fund the frontliners in fight Environmental degradation.
The World Wide Fund in partnership with Government Agencies, Scouts Movement and Buganda Kingdom have been moving a campaign teaching the masses about the dangers of Single-Use Plastics and how they are damaging the land and water bodies.
On Saturday, 27, March, 2021 while addressing media at Uganda Media Centre in Kampala, the Archbishop of Church of Uganda, Kazimba Mugalu says that even the Bible supports the protection of the planet, that God handed us.
Kazimba quoted a chapter in the Bible, Genesis 1:9, that shows how God Created water, Land and it’s fruits.
“Before creating man, God first created, water, land, trees, fruits, but the planet that God gave us to protect now we turned against it.” Archbishop said before adding. “So this campaign of protecting and reclaiming our environment is good and Christians should join this campaign to fight against the use of single-Use plastics.
We talk about working for Heaven but we don’t know the heaven, let’s first protect the Earth that God gave us. It’s not only about Christians, but also those from other religions, join the race.” Kazimba said.
“Let’s avoid dumping plastics every where, but I also blame the government who has failed to ban the production of these plastics, maybe they get a lot of money from it. Please Christians, let’s plant trees, and this time we ask more women who are pregnant to plant trees.”
Minister for Water and Environment, Hon. Sam Cheptoris wondered why people don’t repeat for their own sins, and even protect the land they feed from.
“I don’t know why we don’t repent, of what we are doing, we are killing ourselves. But as government we shall continue preaching this message, such that a few can take our advise.
It’s not too late for us to change.” Hon. Sam said.
He also revealed that the government, this year will be planting 40 million trees as a way to restore the environment.
“As government we going to mobilize to plant 40 million trees this year. We are determined to ensure that we regain our natural green.” He added.
WWF country Director, David Duri, on this day it’s when he revealed to the world that only 9% plastics are recycled and the rest end in water bodies and land.
“This year, we continue to be reminded about the fact that humans are damaging the environment faster than it can recover.
We need to slow the flow of plastic at its source, but we also need to improve the way we manage our plastic waste because a lot of it ends up in the environment.
Only 9% of all plastic waste ever produced has been recycle, About 12% has been incinerated while 79% has accumulated in landfills, dumps or the natural environment.” David Duri revealed.
