Busitema University Hosts Successful Inaugural Lacrosse Championship

Busitema University has reaffirmed its growing reputation as one of Uganda’s most vibrant sporting institutions after successfully hosting the inaugural Busitema University Open Lacrosse Championship on Saturday.
The historic event drew top lacrosse teams from both Uganda and Kenya, underscoring the university’s strong commitment to promoting diverse sporting disciplines beyond the traditional games.
Among the participants were Makerere University Business School (MUBS), Metropolitan International University, Rock Stars Lacrosse Club from Kenya, St. Mary’s High School Zirobwe, Busia Seed Secondary School, Tororo Girls School, and the host team, Busitema University.
MUBS emerged the dominant force of the tournament, clinching both the men’s and women’s titles after a series of thrilling matches. The Kenyan side Rock Stars Lacrosse finished runners-up in both categories, while St. Peter’s College Tororo (men) and Metropolitan International University (women) claimed third-place honors.
Speaking after the championship, Busitema University officials described the event as a milestone in the institution’s sports journey. They emphasized that the introduction of lacrosse aligns with the university’s mission to nurture all-round students through active participation in a variety of sports.
The well-organized tournament attracted an impressive crowd of students and sports enthusiasts, who filled the Busitema grounds with energy and color. Beyond competition, the event showcased the growing collaboration between Ugandan and Kenyan lacrosse communities, aiming to develop the sport across the region.
Lacrosse, though still in its early stages in East Africa, is steadily gaining attention in schools and universities. With Busitema’s successful hosting of the event, stakeholders believe the sport could soon join the ranks of Uganda’s mainstream university competitions.
The Busitema University Open Lacrosse Championship not only celebrated athletic excellence but also symbolized the university’s deepening love for sports and its commitment to empowering students through teamwork, discipline, and innovation.
