Buganda Schools Championship: Minister Launches 2022 Edition
After over two years of no show due to turmoil of Covid-19 pandemic, the Buganda Schools Sports activities are back on calendar this year.
The Buganda minister for Sports, Leisure and Recreation, Owek. Henry Ssekabembe Kiberu officially launched the 2022 edition on Thursday at Bulange Mengo.
The soft-spoken minister thanked the schools for their endless support to the development and growth of Buganda even in the times of economic crisis in the country.
“As Kingdom, we are very grateful to schools that endlessly engage in activities of the Kingdom, even in this economic crisis, you decided not to let the Kingdom.” Owek. Ssekabembe extended his appreciation to schools on behalf of the Kingdom.
The minister also tasked the Buganda Schools Sports Committee to find out why these days,the traditional schools in the Kingdom no longer embrace these sports activities.
The minister further asked the games masters and schools to have transparency in whatever they do.
“Let’s embrace transparency, let’s be loyal to ourselves and the children, why force a child to play in a category he or she doesn’t fit, why do you use children of not your school and make that kid to lie, you think which citizen do you making in that kid?, Let’s build the future we want in these kids.” He emphasized.
On Thursday, the committee held a one day workshop with teachers, and coaches and they reviewed the laws and among the changes made ; schools in football will only field three premier league players that is if they do have them.
The sports disciplines in this year’s edition include; Football for both boys and girls, Netball for primary and secondary, Volleyball, Woodball, Basketball and handball.
The registration for any school to take part is between 250,000/- and 100,000/- per sports discipline.
The competitions will commence on 4th June 2022 at various grounds.
