Avice Meya Leads Uganda’s Charge to Africa Swimming Championships

Uganda Aquatics has flagged off a team of senior and junior swimmers ahead of the upcoming Africa Swimming Championships 2026, scheduled to run from May 5th to 10th in Algeria.
The flag-off ceremony was held on Saturday at Elite Swim and Gym, with officials expressing confidence in the team’s readiness. The delegation is set to depart on Sunday aboard Turkish Airlines.
The senior team features four swimmers: team captain Avice Meya, Gloria Anna Muzito, Tendo Mukalazi, and Pendo Calvin Moses Kaumi. The junior squad includes Tara Kisawuzi Naluwooza, Mary Peyton Suubi, Jordan Jolly Ssamula, Ethan Ssengoba, Kyle Christian Kaweesa Kimuli, and Daniel Rukundo Muwagaba. Masters swimmer Peter Will Ssebanakitta also joins the contingent.
Speaking at the flag-off, Uganda Aquatics president Moses B. Mwase rallied the athletes to compete as a unified team.
“We’re here under one brand, Team Uganda. Forget about your team or club, we’re going as one. Only go when you’re ready to take on the mantle,” Mwase said.
Mwase also highlighted the significance of the championship, noting that it is a recognized qualifying event where swimmers’ times will be recorded internationally.
“Ranking is individual, not country-based, because this is an individual sport. But since this is a recognized event, athletes’ performances here can count towards national and international records,” he explained.
Particular praise was reserved for team captain Avice Meya, who returns to competitive action after at least 18 months hiatus. Mwase described her as a source of inspiration, especially in addressing the high dropout rate among female swimmers.
“Avice is one of our most inspirational female athletes. She has been in the water for the longest time, and her continued presence motivates the next generation. Having her still competing at a high level is something we are proud of,” he added.
The president expressed optimism about the team’s prospects in Algeria.
“The athletes have been working hard, and I believe this will be another trip where Uganda puts up a strong performance.”
Among the swimmers, Pendo Calvin Moses Kaumi voiced confidence ahead of his debut at the continental stage.
“All the hard work I have put in since I was younger is finally paying off. Representing my country has always been my goal, and I aim to post strong times, hopefully reaching 630 points and above,” Kaumi said.
He credited his preparation to intensive training under coach Tony Kasujja.
“I believe I am more than prepared now. The training sessions have equipped me well for this event.”
The team will be led by Mwase as head of delegation, alongside coach Peter S. Mugisha, as Uganda seeks to make its mark at the continental championship.
