AUUS Inter University Games 2023: Officially Opened, IUIU, KU, Nkumba Start Better
The Association of Uganda University Sports Inter University games of the 19th edition have officially flagged off on Sunday evening at Uganda Christian University.
David Katende, the NCS assistant general secretary represented his boss Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel as the guest of honor at UCU Mukono, he asked athletes to take games very serious because they can be their turning point in their sports career.
“I heard that UCU wasn’t the primary host of these games, you came in as substitutes, I thank you for being a a dangerous substitute and you have nailed it.” Says David Katende, the guest of honor.
Katende also asked athletes to commit to what they are doing and take sport as a serious one because the University games can be a good starting point in their career.
“To athletes, take these games as very serious, one of our own, Joshua Cheptegei, he was once your own, he started from these games and he is now our G.O.A.T, so use well these games, they can be a starting point.”
In his speech, Katende asserted that Government is committed to help Universities when it comes to infrastructural development of the sports facilities.
“”I urge the various Universities to take sport very seriously and I want to inform you that; government is ready and willing to partner with you in particular the development of sports infrastructure to be able to promote sports in your institutions, kindly I request, you share with us your infrastructural development plan and we see where we can come in.” Said David Katende.
The 19th edition has attracted 24 Universities and over 1000 athletes are taking part in 16 sports disciplines.
In football boys, Kampala University has a perfect start of the tournament, winning two of their opening fixtures, beating Soroti University 4-0 and Bishop Stuart 1-0.
In handball, Kampala University win both of their two gender fixtures beating Kyambogo University both in men and women.
Nkumba University beat Busitema University 2-0 in football while finalists, Islamic University in Uganda beat Uganda Martyrs University 2-1, Watuwa Samuel and Walwasa Nathan scoring for IUIU while Ogwang Francis netted the only goal for wasteful UMU.
UCU had a surprise defeat at home, losing 2-0 to Makerere University.
In Netball, UCU humiliated Bishop Stuart, beating them 115-08, Victoria University won and Mountain of the Moon registered a win against Soroti University, Nkumba University also won.
In basketball boys, Kampala University beat Makerere University 69-63 while UCU came from down to beat Bugema 69-65.
The games will continue until Friday.
