All Africa Badminton Senior Championship: Perfect Start for Team Uganda, Humbles Mozambique

On Monday, team Uganda started their journey of fighting for a better medal in the All Africa Badminton Senior championship with a win over Mozambique in team events.

Team Uganda won five points and lost no game on match day one, winning in women doubles, men doubles, singles and mixed doubles.

In the first game, Amos Muyanja and Kenneth Comfort Mwambu beat Mozambique’s duo of Idrisse Issofo Mossagy and Edmilson Paulo Mutondo two sets straight, 21-09,21-10 in men’s double.

Gladys Mbabazi and Fadilah Shamika Muhammad found no hurdle to beat Jessica De Almeida and Afrika Matsinhe, 21-04,21-02 in women doubles.

Kasirye Brian in men singles humbled Idrisse Issofo Mossagy of Mozambique in two set straight victory, [21-08,21-07] before Husna Kobugabe beat Afrika Matsinhe in women singles, 21-03,21-04.

In mixed doubles, Brian Kasirye and Fadilah Shamika beat Edmilson Paulo Mutondo and Jessica De Almeida 21-11,21-05.

This means Uganda secured all the five points and they need to beat the hosts, South Africa to top the group and the custodian of the team, coach Kalimunda Ivan believes that it’s very possible for team Uganda.

“Day one has been good to us, we won all our games, all the players we fielded won the game with the margin of 2-0.

We and South Africa won with the same margin of 5-0 against the same side, that is Mozambique, so tomorrow is a decider to see who will top the group.” Said Coach Kalimunda Ivan.

“But I attribute this win for the good preparations we had in the residential, we had better training and the players followed the strategies we laid out.

Tomorrow we may have changes, so depending on the strength of our opponent, he is at home, so we need to use high tactics to win against South Africa. We are going to do our best to see that we beat South Africa because we have even beaten them, though in Kampala but we believe even here we can still make it despite the fact that we are at their home.”
