Agriculture: Rice Farmers Sensitized On How to Use Wetlands Minus Damaging the Environment
Bugweri: The Bugweri District local government in conjunction with Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Water and Environment, NEMA and PAL Rice Company held a sensitization meeting with the Rice growers in a pursuit to reduce damage on Wetlands.
Before addressing media in Tuesday, the Chief Adminstrative Officer of Bugweri district Kirenda Nelson. He first chaired a meeting that involved both the out going and incoming district councillors,technical staff,officials from water and environment,NEMA, Ministry of Agriculture and PAL Rice Company based in Busembatia trying to pave a way on how to protect the Wetlands in Bugweri and Bugiri Districts.
CAO,Kirenda said they were aiming at finding possible ways on how to bring up projects that will uplift rice growers in Bugweri and Bugiri district.
“We are trying to get a project, that will help Farmers growing rice in Wetlands, the project will help to save water that will help Farmers grow their rice without skipping any season, we already started but as a district we want to reach at village level to see that we Sensitize them.” CAO told media after the meeting at District Headquarters.
The wetland coordinator for Eastern region as well as team leader for environment and natural resources, Kabalu Deo Says they are to sensitize and set up projects that will enable farmers on proper use of wetlands while growing rice.
It is said that Farmers don’t know how to use Wetlands, which affects the environment.
