Human Rights Violation: NCHRD-U Vow Not to Be Passive Bystanders in Current Situation

Since campaigns and election time from 2020, kidnapping, extra judicial killings, disappearance of people, torture in Uganda has been a hit song and still on top until now but with no clear reasons as to why such acts endlessly carry on.

Today in Ntinda , The National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders in Uganda (NCHRD-U) have addressed press through their Executive Director Mr. Robert Kirenga on endless human rights violation in the country.

The human rights defenders asserted that these inhumane acts  negatively affect human rights defenders and they deserve urgent attention by the relevant authorities.

“The incommunicado detention and the continuous infringement of torture should come to an end , it’s our humble call to government to intervene and stop the  unnecessary arrests among the Ugandans, the likes of Kakwenza Rukirabasheija who was arrested by members of Uganda’s security agencies on December 28 /2021 despite a court order calling for his unconditional release on January 4th 2022, but he continued being held incommunicado in total disregard of court order.” NCHRD-U Executive director said.

“On March 10th 2022, 9 staff of an on- line digital television The Alternative Digitalks were kidnapped from their offices by UPDF officers and held incommunicado with out access to their lawyers or informing their next of kin or relatives.”

“In both cases we note three deeply disconcerting issues, incommunicado detention beyond 48 hours rule, allegations of torture and disrespect of court orders by officers of security agencies.”

The Coalition also revealed that in Uganda, there is nothing like freedom of speech because whoever speak about anything wrong the people in power are doing, he or she get arrested.
