St. Lawrence University vs MUBS

Two-time champions Makerere University Business School (MUBS) are away to St. Lawrence University tomorrow Tuesday in the first leg of their Pepsi University Football League semi-final tie at their Kavule Grounds, Mpigi on Masaka Road at 3:00pm.

This is St. Lawrence’s third consecutive appearance at the semi-final stage of the competition and in the previous edition they made it all the way to the final where they lost to defending champions Uganda Christian University.

MUBS however have not made it to the semi-final stage since 2017 when they lost in the final to Uganda Martyrs University.

However for St. Lawrence University coach, Nnono Ssozi, MUBS remain the favourites going into the tie.

“MUBS are ultimately favourites given how they have played throughout the tournament. They have won all of their games this season and they have very good players and a very rich history as far as this competition is concerned so I think we are going to have the game of our lives as St. Lawrence,” Nnono said

“But I am confident that we shall do well. The only time we have met was in our debut season in 2017 and they beat us home and away in the group stages but since that time we have greatly improved and were Runners-Up in the previous edition,” Nnono added.

“We shall be careful as we play them. MUBS are a threat, but ultimately our aim is to lift the trophy this season having been 1st Runners-Up last season and 2nd Runners-Up the season before. It’s going to be a good game and we are looking forward to it,” Nnono concluded.

For MUBS stand-in coach Zinda Ali, the onus is on them to prove that they belong in the semi-finals.

MUBS 100% record in the competition was dramatically brought to an end when they were defeated by Kyambogo University in the second leg of their quarter-final tie losing the game 2-1 and sending the tie into penalties which they lost 4-1.

However it was established that Kyambogo University’s goalkeeper in that game was a non-student by the names of Serugo Amir who was playing in the names of Ahebwomugisha Andrew. The match was therefore awarded to MUBS who progressed to the semi-final instead of Kyambogo University.

“I think our team as been the best in the league so far and we are looking forward to maintaining that. Despite the challenge with the quarter-final, we still have the same energy and I am confident we shall continue with our good results,” Zinda Ali said.

“St. Lawrence is a very good team with very good players and we shall have to be very careful when we play them but I am sure we shall win,” Zinda added

Action in the Pepsi University Football League continues on Thursday 27th October when Uganda Martyrs University host defending champions Uganda Christian University for the second leg of their semi-final tie. UCU won the first leg in Mukono 1-0 and it will be all to play for when the two sides meet in Nkozi.
