Wakiso Zone champions Rines Secondary School made a powerful statement in their quest for the USSSA Ball Games I girls’ football title, thrashing St Peter High School Hoima 6-0 in a dominant opening display on Thursday at UCU.

Rines SS showed class and cohesion from the onset, with their attacking unit proving too strong for the Hoima City representatives. The promising left-footed midfielder Halima Mupyanga and Nakawuki Trinah each grabbed a brace, while captain Ayerango Justine and Zoena Nandhego also got on the scoresheet in a one-sided affair.

Zoena Nandhego opened the scoring with a composed tap-in off an assist from Nakawuki Trinah, before captain Ayerango Justine doubled the lead with a similar finish before halftime. Just three minutes into the second half, Halima Mupyanga extended the advantage and later completed her brace, while Nakawuki Trinah added two more to seal a comprehensive 6-0 victory. Defender Jovia Nakirya was instrumental, providing four assists in a standout performance.

Rines SS, drawn in Group C alongside Moyo High School, St Peter High School Hoima, and Bubiita Seed Secondary School, will return to action on Friday at Our Lady of Africa SS against Bubiita Seed. Victory in that fixture would see them secure a place in the round of sixteen.

Meanwhile, Bukedea Comprehensive School, last year’s Bukedea District champions, settled for a draw against Kisozi Seed Secondary School in an entertaining, end-to-end encounter played at UCU Stadium. Both sides showed attacking intent but could not be separated at full time.

Elsewhere, Ankole region champions Boni Consillii cruised past Masaka SS with a 3-0 win, while Kawempe Muslim SS came from a goal down to defeat St Andrews Ruhindi 3-1. Mukono Kings High School delivered the most emphatic result of the day, hammering Jubilee 2000 Secondary School 17-0 in a remarkable goal fest.

The tournament continues with more group stage fixtures as teams push for early qualification to the knockout rounds.
