Ug Decides2021: Once Elected, I’m Going To Put Much Emphasis On Implementation Of Laws, Workers’ Aspiring Mp, Agatha Namirembe
The 11th parliament that starts in 2021, will need five Workers representative, Agatha Namirembe Arembe is among the many who wants to grab a slot from those available.
The Chairperson, Uganda Public Employees Union and a Chemist by profession wants to represent the workers in Parliament and once elected, she vowed to first handle the implementation of workers’ laws.
The National Water and Sewerage Corporation worker in-charge of occupational safety and Health department believes that the workers’ laws are very good but the greatest challenge they face is the implementation.
“The key issues I want to look at is the implementation of laws, that’s where I have seen the biggest challenge.” Said Agatha Namirembe
“We have very good laws, that need some few adjustments based on the new technology that we have and new methods of work. And also be prepared for such natural disasters like COVID-19, how workers are prepared and there enabling laws that can protect us in such seasons” Namirembe added.
Not all workers in Uganda are under Unions even though the 45 available can encompass them all regardless of level of education.
Agatha who also attended the COVID-19 and Workers’ rights consultative Breakfast meeting at Jokas Hotel Bweyogerere, asserted that she is to see that all workers go to their umbrellas.
“Unionisation is another issue, we have a problem of people being outside the unions yet we have 45 Unions in the country covering all sectors of workers.
No workers must be left out, we should all have to come together and have a strong voice to work on our challenges. With the numbers for us is fine.“
Workers especially the casual labours in factories get a lot of safety challenges, many died and others became disabled and to the worst they are not compensated.
“The other critical issue, I want to tackle is the occupational health and safety, I am occupational and safety Specialist, we have very many issues.
In that our work places are not safe and none is taking the initiative that workplaces are safe.
It’s a function of an MP to actually go ahead to see that there is these implementation to inspect the work places.” Namirembe explaining.
