The Return of Boxing, UBF Introduces new Competition dubbed Champions League
After being quiet for almost a year due COVID-19 outbreak in the Country, Uganda Boxing Federation set to bounce back on scene with a new competition dubbed Champions League.
The league which is expected to pave it’s way on scene on 3rd April 2021, will encompass the National Open Championship medalists from each weight category and it will run for a whole year as Federation President Moses Muhangi explains.
“As a federation we always create ideas, so this time round we have initiated a new idea to see that our boxers are kept fit and active”
“So we have come up with a new competition named Champions League, we found out that their is a weakness, previously when a boxer done with National open, he or she remains dormant but this League shall keep them fit always even by the time we would need them at National team, the selection system can be easy for us.” Muhangi explaining after Meeting boxers at Lugogo on Saturday.
Muhangi is saying that this League will be in a round robin system, each group will be with four boxers and each will play against each other and the best with most points shall be representing the nation in any given tournament.
This League shall also act as a stepping stone for those boxers who may prefer to turn Pro as Muhangi is saying.
“Those who want to turn Pro we have increased rounds from three to five, and today we met with the boxers to orient them about the new idea. We have given them this month of March to prepare as we also work on all the clearances and in April we shall be starting the league.”
On why they decided to come up with this idea, Muhangi said that they want to use that avenue to attract sponsors into Boxing, helping Boxers keep themselves fit and even to provide enough boxing content to the sport lovers and the public at large.
Muhangi is saying that this League will be commercial and all the boxers, coaches and clubs who will get involved in it shall be getting a token.
According to expectations, every weekend at Lugogo Indoor Arena at least they will have six bouts.
