Pepsi UFL: Makerere Takes Charge of First Leg, UCU’s only Hope Remains at Mukono

Makerere University 2-1 Uganda Christian University
The first leg of of first quarterfinal of Pepsi University Football League finally came to an end on Friday afternoon after being played across two days.
This first leg encounter Makerere University took advantage of following a 2-1 Victory at ‘Teargas Arena’, was halted yesterday at the 32nd minute mark due to heavy downpour which put the pitch in unplayable state and postponed. It was postponed to today, 10am at the same venue and it got done in the afternoon.
By the time it was halted yesterday, both sides were square with two goals scored, It was the hosting side that first took the lead in the 18th minute through Male Musa wonder strike. Twelve minutes later, skipper, Geofrey Gagganga leveled the matters in the 30th minute with a near post header.
Before, Ddungu Nicolas separated the tie in the 74th minute strike and the eventual winner of the game, UCU had two clear chances to first go in the lead but on both occasions, Wejuli Joel, Makerere University’s custodian was equalize to challenge.
Makerere took the first leg advantage but their tactician, Douglas Bamweyana is sure it’s not yet done because UCU will be at home and it’s a good side.
“it’s a start, not entirely the nature of the game we wanted to play but the result is not exactly bad, there is still something we can take.” Says Bamweyana
“We are looking forward to the next game because it’s just halftime, we cant get excited because the result is still evenly balanced because they scored here but we believe, we have the quality, we will work hard and in the next game where we’re going to prove ourselves and the quality we think, we do present.” Douglas Bamweyana added.
Jimmy Kintu was happy with the result despite the fact that they lost to first leg.
“True we have lost the game here, but again we wanted to come here and score which we did, for me I think it’s going to be a good thing for us because we have to use the home advantage, we’re well prepared at home, we play with enough authority, we have to dictate terms and to manage the game and we want to qualify.” Says Jimmy Kintu, UCU Tactician
The two sides will meet for second leg on 29th February, 2024 at UCU Mukono Campus playground.
The league will continue on Tuesday when Bugema University will be hosting the two time champions, MUBS.
