Pepsi UFL: ‘Buganda Ancestors’ Give Royal Lions Green light to Semis, Hold UMU Until next Season

Muteesa I Royal University secured a historic place in the Pepsi University Football League semifinals after edging Uganda Martyrs University 1-0 in a tense quarterfinal second leg played in Masaka, sealing a 2-2 aggregate victory.

In a fiercely contested Masaka Road derby, the breakthrough came early in the second half when Lutwama Ali calmly converted from the penalty spot in the 48th minute, handing the hosts a crucial lead that ultimately proved decisive.

The opening half had seen both sides locked in a tactical battle, with Uganda Martyrs—nicknamed the Saints—well organized defensively and resilient under pressure. Muteesa I Royal, however, showed attacking intent through Sserugo Geoffrey, who repeatedly troubled the visitors’ backline with his pace and dribbling ability.

Uganda Martyrs thought they had taken the lead midway through the first half, but Obedgiu Ronald’s effort was ruled out for offside, offering the Royal Lions a lifeline in a tightly balanced contest.

After the restart, the game shifted momentum. A foul on Busuulwa Patrick inside the area handed Muteesa I Royal the perfect opportunity, and Lutwama made no mistake from 12 yards to ignite celebrations among the home supporters.

With the lead secured, the Royal Lions adopted a cautious approach, focusing on game management as Uganda Martyrs piled on late pressure. Despite several promising moments—including a late chance for Obedgiu that drifted inches wide—the defending champions could not find an equalizer.

At the final whistle, jubilation erupted as Muteesa I Royal confirmed their place in the semifinals for the first time in the competition’s history. Their achievement marks a significant milestone, especially after their debut campaign last season ended at the hands of Bugema University.

For Uganda Martyrs University, the defeat brings an end to their title defense, forcing them to shift focus to the next edition of the tournament.

Muteesa I Royal now joins Kampala University in the semifinals, with two slots still up for grabs. Attention turns to Wednesday’s decisive second leg clash between Ndejje University and St Lawrence University at Nakivubo Stadium in Kampala, where St Lawrence carry a slender 2-1 advantage.

The Pepsi UFL continues to deliver drama, and if this derby was anything to go by, the road to the final promises even more excitement.
