PFU Legends Match: Uganda, DR Congo Ex-Internationals Set to Renew Rivalry
Former football stars from Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo are set to renew their rivalry on Sunday, November 1, 2026, when the two sides meet in the PFU Legends Match at YES Arena, Nsambya.
The exhibition match, organised by the Professional Footballers’ Union of Uganda (PFU), is scheduled to kick off at 4:00 PM and will bring together former internationals from both countries in a celebration of football heritage.
Beyond the anticipated reunion and on-pitch action, the match will shine a spotlight on the welfare of retired footballers and the need to support players beyond their active careers.
Football legends deserve better
For many former players, retirement comes with significant challenges, including access to healthcare, financial insecurity and the difficulty of transitioning into careers outside football.
Through its Legends Charter, the PFU seeks to address these concerns by promoting players’ welfare, health, career transition and capacity building, while strengthening unity among former footballers.
The initiative also highlights the importance of medical assistance, mental wellness support and opportunities for retired players to develop skills in coaching, sports administration, business and financial management.
The objective is to ensure that the end of a football career does not mean the end of a player’s dignity, purpose or contribution to society.
Uganda, DR Congo rivalry renewed
The clash between Uganda’s ex-internationals and DR Congo’s former stars, known as the International Leopards, will give fans an opportunity to reconnect with players who once represented their respective countries.
Although national pride is expected to add a competitive edge to the encounter, the fixture also presents an opportunity to strengthen relationships between former players across the region.
For supporters, the game will rekindle memories of past football heroes, while the players will have an opportunity to reconnect with former teammates, opponents and fans.
The match also serves as a reminder that retired footballers remain an important part of the sport’s history and development.
PFU targets players at every stage
The union’s work extends beyond retired footballers to include active players and young talents preparing to build careers in the game.
For active players, the PFU promotes contract protection, legal guidance and welfare support. Young footballers, meanwhile, are targeted through mentorship, career planning, sports education and personal development.
This approach emphasises the importance of preparing players for life after football before retirement arrives.
A call to honour football’s heroes
The PFU Legends Match presents an opportunity for clubs, administrators, sponsors, supporters and other stakeholders to reflect on their responsibility towards the players who have contributed to the development of football.
Beyond the excitement of match day, the lasting impact of the initiative will depend on the practical support and opportunities made available to former players.
When Uganda’s ex-internationals face their Congolese counterparts at YES Arena, the score will provide the sporting contest, but the bigger objective will be to promote a future in which football’s heroes are recognised, supported and given opportunities to thrive beyond the pitch.
