Ntulume Wins Historic Silver as Uganda Shines in Breakdance Debut at African Youth Games

Uganda’s George Ntulume etched his name into the history books after winning a silver medal in the inaugural breakdance competition at the African Youth Games in Angola, marking a landmark moment for the country’s growing urban sports movement.

The 17-year-old delivered a composed and electrifying performance throughout the competition, navigating a demanding group stage to book his place among the continent’s elite. Ntulume opened his campaign in commanding fashion with a 3–0 victory over Senegal’s Cise, before battling to a 1–1 draw against compatriot Seny of Senegal. Despite a narrow 2–1 loss to Algeria’s Driss, Ntulume finished second in his group to progress to the semifinals.

Raising his level when it mattered most, the Ugandan star produced one of his best displays of the tournament in the semifinals, sweeping aside Tunisia’s Saji 3–0 to seal a place in the final and guarantee Uganda a historic medal.

In the gold medal showdown, Ntulume faced home favourite Julio of Angola in front of a passionate local crowd. The final proved tightly contested, with the Angolan edging the battle 2–0 to claim gold, leaving Ntulume to settle for a well-earned silver medal.

Reflecting on his achievement, Ntulume expressed pride in his performance and optimism for the future. “It was an amazing experience, and I’m proud of myself for making it to the final,” he said. “I’ll take the lessons learned and come back stronger.”

Angola’s Julio claimed gold, while Algeria’s Driss secured the bronze medal, rounding off a fiercely competitive debut event.

Ntulume’s silver medal represents a significant milestone for Uganda, not only at the African Youth Games but also for the country’s breakdance community, which continues to gain momentum on the continental stage. His achievement is expected to inspire a new wave of young dancers and strengthen Uganda’s presence in emerging sports disciplines.
